A friend contacted me after noticing a pair of Spur Winged Plovers had made a nest near our local golf course. So day after day I went out and watched and of the four eggs three hatched. Plovers are quite territorial and on more than one occasion Mama and Papa Plover let me know my presence was not appreciated. They have now moved on to an adjacent paddock thank goodness. I was having attacks of panic at the end when I would go there and see the chicks on the road. Hopefully they will live a long and wonderful life.

    1. Well the babies that I saw can run quite well the day they are born. And man, when Mama or Papa squeal, they drop so quickly in to a crouch, and I was looking everywhere but they just seem to disappear almost in to the ground.

    1. So I found out. Papa kept getting all puffy and both of them dived at me a couple of times. I tried to be as respectful as I could though and allow them enough space so they would not get to nervous.

    1. Me too PP. I was not at all confident they would make it a day living right next to a road. Especially one that leads to a golf course and a lot of orchards that are now being picked.

      1. I would feel very honoured to be witness to it. Some terrible things in the news here with a missing child that didn’t end so well. I just can’t watch the news anymore it is so heartbreaking. Hope and happiness is something we need to focus on more.

        1. I have become very selective in what news I watch. Here in NZ the MSM are in the government’s pocket and therefore we get a very biased view on the news concerning NZ. I tend to go online and pick and choose. Actually I do not think I have turned on my TV in weeks.

          1. In China we got limited news and I was OK with that. Here we are overwhelmed with news channels and commercials! I am terrible because I would rather not know. My only daily news I regularly watch is the all weather channel.

  8. So totally adorable and what a great find and shot Jo! They are very territorial indeed. We have different kinds of Plovers here as well and they can be quite aggressive when you come near their nests or little ones. 😀

    1. They were actually on the side of a road outside our local golf course. Luckily a friend spotted them and let me know, as he knew I would be beside myself with joy to see them. I went out for a few days to watch as the babies hatched. They have now moved on to a safer paddock across the road.
