I found this community busy outside by my front steps. Hours later and lots of photos taken…only one image comes even close to making me happy. Well – no, not happy – but at least it shows what I was trying to do. Back to the drawing board I guess.
And now…for something completely off track.
I read about this during the week, and would really like your opinion. People are pouring aluminum down ant hills to make art. With the poor old ants in residence.
I was taken aback to say the least…okay they may be ants…and at times they are annoying, but seriously. This is cruelty right ???
Here is a video of a scientist doing just that. It seems to me that even for science there must be better ways to study ants than to pour molten aluminum over them.
What do you think ????
This is fantastic, Jo

Isn’t one cast enough? It looked like he had several of them hanging in his room or something. He also said this one was the best…I would like to know why one isn’t enough. You could actually see dead ants where they were holding the cast.

I wondered if there was not some other way without killing the ants.

No go, Jo! Anyway, it’s not original and creative, just making a mould from nature. Like your community (and admire your persistence). 🙂

Thanks Meredith. So glad you think it is a ‘no go’ as well.

Love your photo, Jo. I can’t help feeling sorry for those destroyed ant colonies, although what the research revealed is so fascinating.

I know…the finished mold was amazing but I can’t help thinking…imagine some giant came along and did that to us because we were tiny critters he couldn’t understand.

I think one would be enough … after all ants are living creatures … and love your community in the process of expanding 🙂

Luckily they have moved on from the front steps…I was a bit worried about stepping on them.

Great photo and interpretation, Jo. But the practice…I’m not an ant fan, but that sounds pretty awful…

Thanks Sue…I have to agree…I wonder how they would feel if some person did that to them.

Ooer….. I really like the photo, but I think there are many other ways of making art. (Not that I agree with all of those either) and as for science…….

Thanks…I have to agree with you…seems a bit too much for me for even science, but now people are doing it for art !!!

I can’t help thinking that pic of yours looks like termites, as cool as the pic is. I’m no bug expert, so whatever.
P.S. The colony mold making? I also can’t help thinking there’s got to be a better way. I’m not a big fan of ants, but hey! Ouch!

Luckily they were just ants Gemma. Ouch…exactly !!!

Good up-close photo, Jo. I do not like ants in my house…I leave them alone outside to do whatever it is they do. Pouring molten aluminum into the ant’s home is cruel!

Thanks Angeline !! I think it is pretty cruel as well…and so unnecessary.

Good picture, but those poor ants! 😦 One mold should be enough! All life is sacred, even the lowliest of ants. I love science, but sometimes I think the price for the knowledge we gain is too high. *sigh*

I can’t help but think that there are other ways to find all this stuff out these days. They can examine almost everything without destroying it and life, so just because it is ants…doesn’t matter. not good.
