Light and culture…a way forward maybe ???

Day 87 - 27.4.2013
Me and the ZORRO hat !!!!!

So while the computer IS co-operating…here is my take on Ailsa’s theme this week. The technique is called BOKEH. After almost 55 years…the light sometimes even makes me look reasonable. Yes this was today’s photo for my 365 challenge. But being on a dinosaur laptop…well I haven’t been able to load it on to THAT page yet. I have really. really developed a HAT obsession.

This week’s theme at the Weekly Photo Challenge is CULTURE. I think this fits for one reason. So much of culture these days tells us that to be seen as beautiful you have to be young. While by no stretch of the imagination do I think I am beautiful I do think we need to remember that each age has beauty. We need to change the culture that diminishes the beauty that age gives us. I look this way because…well there is a line in a favourite movie star’s movie that I think says it all.

If my muscles ache it’s cause I used them. If it’s hard for me to walk up them steps now, it’s cause I walked up them every night to lay next to a man who loved me. I got a few wrinkles here and there, but I’ve laid under thousands of skies on sunny days, yeah. I look and feel this way, well, cause I drank and I smoked, I lived and I loved, and danced, sang, sweat and screwed my way through a pretty damn good life, if you ask me. Getting old ain’t bad Ben. Getting old, that’s earned.

I think she had a point !!!!

As an aside…when I was younger there is no way I would have posed for a shot like this one. I thought I was fat, not too great looking. It is only with age that I appreciate not only how I used to look…but the way I look now. Maturity does have its advantages.

    1. I think it is a bit of both…youth suggests a certain type of beauty. Fresh and innocent with no road maps of life itself. The very thing we should be happy about is the thing many try to hide…the marks of living.

    1. I like to think my inner beauty pops out every now and again Angeline but I love that you think so. It is one of my favourite parts of the movie. Bonnie Bramlett is terrific in The Guardian.

    1. Awwwww…I don’t think dear Meryl has much to worry about. I saw what SHE could do in ‘Mamma Mia’, but I love the comparison. You are so good for me !!

  1. I have to say, I LOVE this picture of you! I think this one is probably one of my very favorites of your 365 challenge so far. 😀 I agree with you about the culture thing- it’s sad but true that society endlessly worships youth and physical beauty over wisdom and inner beauty, but there it is…you either adapt, accept or learn to just not give a flying f*ck what others think and be the best person you can be anyway. Personally, I like the last option the best. This picture has got the song from “A Chorus Line” stuck in my head now….”One! Singular sensation…every little step she takes!”…

    1. Awwwwwww !! I must admit…it is one of my favourites so far. I had fun doing it. Taking very LITTLE steps at the moment. But at least I am still going forward.

      1. I do too. I find myself pillaging other languages more and more to express things English simply doesn’t have words for. Scots and Yiddish seem particularly fruitful!

        1. Oh I love Scots…it sounds so real !!!
Words like ‘fash’ sounds so much better than annoy or inconvenience.
And confidence doesn’t stand a chance against chutzpah now does it ???

          1. 🙂 you are so right! And nothing describes a child playing with water (or mud) like guddling. My mother used to describe Kiwi friends as glaikit (stupid) when she met them – not realizing their slightly glazed expression was because they didn’t understand her Scots accent!

          2. I like that word guddling. That is funny about your Mum. Accents are so weird…I was listening to some Aussies from WWII footage the other day…OMG…you need a dictionary to understand and I am Australian.

          3. I know what you mean. One of my partner’s cousins taped their grandmother reminiscing. She was from Southland, and between the accent and the dialect, I was totally lost!

I will try to pop over and look. On this computer that doesn’t ALWAYS work. Sometimes it just will NOT open pages for me. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

          1. I shall keep that in mind. I have a crown of sorts…some berets. It will keep me busy for a few days. Think The Daughter has a tiara somewhere in her old room.

  2. It most certainly DOES have it’s advantages, Jo. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You’re only as beautiful as you feel. Beauty’s only skin deep. DANG, girl. We are beautiful, aren’t we? 😉
