“hark, now hear the sailors cry,
smell the sea, and feel the sky
let your soul & spirit fly, into the mystic…”
― Van Morrison
It is the function of art to renew our perception. What we are familiar with we cease to see. The writer shakes up the familiar scene, and, as if by magic, we see a new meaning in it.
– Anais Nin
I was born in the land of Banjo Paterson, gum trees, and weather extremes.
I am a freelance photographer. I love to make images that make people happy. To capture forever a precious moment.
I am also a freelance writer/editor.
I live in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, but still like to claim my Australian heritage.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Communications in 2008.
I am writing my first novel.
I love to write poetry, short stories, and also write for the web.
And there is nothing that is on a par with a sunny summer's day spent at Waihi Beach.

Neither am I. I try all the time but most usually disappoint me. This was just dumb luck. It is actually really hard to get a good wave photo isn’t it !
😉
Water definitely means renewal. Our world is almost nothing but water even before we’re born, and after we’re born our bodies still consists of close to 60% water.
It’s also the place I go when i need to stop and breathe and find my centre again. It always helps…feeling the sand in between my toes, tasting the salt from the water, hearing it crash and roil and recoil.
Beautiful post. And love the Anais Nin quote. What we are familiar with we cease to see…..but I have found that taking a photograph of the familiar helps me to see it in a different light.
It is the one place where no matter how I am feeling, when I leave there is a lightness of spirit and a sense of self again. I really need to finish the book, sell heaps of copies and buy a beach house…or maybe I could just threaten to move in with the kids and get them to buy me one…hehehehehehehe
😆
Love that picture of the surf! And what a great song. 🙂 I am reminded of our pal the Cap’n…and wondering where he’s gotten off to lately. I guess either kidnapped by pirates or having entirely too much fun in that new car of his. 😉
Very pretty shot, I love photographing the waves

Thanks Nick. I do too…it’s hard though – to get a good shot of them. But the feeling when you do is amazing.

yes, listening to some ocean waves always helped us for a deep renewal – what a pity: we have to drive 300 km to reach the nearest beach!

Oh that sucks. I would be crazed if I couldn’t get near the water. Do you have a lake or river nearby ??

Renewal on at least two levels: The sea is constantly renewing the beach, as well as renewing our souls when we watch it.
