Some of the synonyms I found for FOREIGN are: alien, unaccustomed, unexplored, unfamiliar, unknown. I think it is apt then to say last Thursday I found myself in foreign territory. It has been happening more and more lately. It’s a good thing. Though my incursions in to foreign territory are not as adventurous as those of Burke and Wills, whose 1860-61 expedition through the heart of Australia was stirring stuff to this little Aussie girl growing up, they take me out of my comfort zone and they teach me new exciting things.
I’d like to introduce you to some friends of mine. Talented, clever people they are. On Thursday Joanne [don’t you just lluurrvvv THAT name], rescued me from the middle of an industrial area in the middle of nowhere and let me hang out with her while my car was undergoing repairs. And I will brook no criticism of my BABY…she turns 20 next year. I love my car!!!!!! Almost as much as Dean loves his Baby.
Joanne is [among many other delightful things]a filmmaker. And she was putting together a book trailer for another friend [also extremely talented] Lee Murray. Lee’s book, “Battle of the Birds” is a YA fiction book set in present day America and New Zealand 1000 years ago. It recently won the 2012 Julius Vogel Award for Best Youth Novel..Quite a big deal here in New Zealand and awarded by the SFFANZ.
So I got to help. And we all know how I love doing that. Though only through some tactful intervention from Joanne did everyone walk away from the experience with their sight still intact. I got to be in charge [sort of] of lighting the girls with a 2 in 1 reflector disc as Joanne and her husband Rob McGregor [a terrific well known New Zealand artist] filmed them on Mount Manganui Beach. Did you know those things are dangerous in the wrong hands ???
So here are a few moments from my day…spent in foreign territory.

Thank you Angeline. She is a young lady who is a pupil at the school Joanne sometimes teaches at [yes she moulds young minds as well], and is the most delightful girl. Both of them were such fun and so good at doing this. It really was a joy to be there with them filming. I would not have missed it for anything. And I know who will be doing MY book trailer !!!!

It is [the book]. I finished reading it while watching them edit the trailer. It is a great read for YA fiction. Lee is very talented. She calls me the ‘Dragon Queen’, and has helped with some work on my book, when I got stuck. And it was a great experience…luckily no-one was permanently injured.

Thanks Angelia. It was great fun. Joanne is always a joy to be around as were the girls. And I loved watching how it all comes together. I hope I can talk Lee and Joanne in to letting me show the trailer here when it is finally finished.

I’ll have to check that YA novel out. I teach 7th grade and I’ll bet my students would love it.
Lovely photos – especially the girl in sepia.

Thanks Judy. I think they’d love Lee’s book. There is a link to her website on the page. It is great for providing a fun look at Maori culture and some history of New Zealand.

It was Gilly. I am struggling with a laptop that is a bit slow at the moment. So things take a while to do. Plus trying to actually get somewhere with The Book and a few other ventures, before my animals drive me in to the poor house.

So how did the exam go ????

Jonathan Livingston, of course! 😉 The exam fried my brain cells. I came out of the 4 hours in one room feeling like a shell-shocked survivor of a mental war. I have NO clue whether or not I passed. There were a LOT more accounting questions on it than I expected, and there were more of those than I liked where I had to make my best “guess”. I will find out the week of December 19th, so it’s either gonna be a really good Christmas or one big bummer of a holiday. 😛

It is going to be a great Xmas…my brain cells are always fried…why do you think I imagine things like talking unicorns and dolphin people and plants that suck out people’s brains…did I mention that happens to one of the guys in the book…sucked it all out it did.

Lol yes, I remember that! Reminded me of Little Shop of Horrors. I suppose I’m in good company, then. 😀 Brain-suckers UNITE! hehehe

Yikes! Hmmm….for devious ideas, I recommend picking the good Cap’n’s brains a bit – he’s REALLY good at coming up with devious ideas. After all, he IS a pirate. 😉

Jo, when you get stuck in the middle of nowhere, just let me know on my blog. I’ll come get you. You just go to wait for me to get visa, buy tickets and for the flight time. 😀
