I distrust politicians. They have lost the most important quality in my opinion. Wanting to do the right thing. In the last months I have watched with the rest of the world…fascinated with the goings on of the American election build up. I’m just one Kiwi/Aussie, but quite frankly I’m terrified of what may happen should the wrong man end up sitting in the oval office come November.
Because we have all seen what can happen when that occurs. Look at what George W. Bush did in his years leading the country. I’m sorry to those of you who revere the man, but to many of us he was an idiot who should not have been left in charge of opening and shutting a gate let alone America.
Some of George’s own words.:
- Right now, Iraq is expanding and improving facilities that were used for the production of biological weapons. – George W. Bush September 12, 2002
- Our intelligence officials estimate that Saddam Hussein had the materials to produce as much as 500 tons of sarin, mustard and VX nerve agent. – George W. Bush January 28, 2003
- “Oh, no, we’re not going to have any casualties.” –discussing the Iraq war with Christian Coalition founder Pat Robertson in 2003, as quoted by Robertson
- “I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully.” –Saginaw, Mich., Sept. 29, 2000
- “You work three jobs? … Uniquely American, isn’t it? I mean, that is fantastic that you’re doing that.” –to a divorced mother of three, Omaha, Nebraska, Feb. 4, 2005
- The best way to get the news is from objective sources, and the most objective sources I have are people on my staff who tell me what’s happening in the world. – FOX interview, Sep. 23, 2003.
Do I need to say more ??
We here in New Zealand don’t fare much better. We had Rob Muldoon for a while…luckily I was still in Australia at the time. Rob Muldoon was Prime Minister and a bit arrogant about it all. When a member of parliament threatened to cross the floor on a vote he called a snap election [which he lost]. Just shows…politics and booze don’t mix.
And we have a man now as Prime Minister who is arrogant and so far removed from the idea that he is in Parliament to do what the New Zealand public wants it is downright scary. Our Mr Key is also the Minister to whom our own little spy agency reports. The GCSB has been up to some rather naughty things lately [illegal spying on New Zealand residents], and our prime Minister claims ignorance on all counts. While everyone else here wants answers and an inquiry by an impartial office Mr Key thinks different.
“We know what’s wrong, we know what we have to do to fix it,” he said. Read more: http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news/world/nz-pm-says-no-to-another-spying-inquiry/story-e6frfkui-1226483007629#ixzz27nkRw9RG
Australia has had a few odd balls as well. Too many to mention. But Joe Bjelke-Petersen comes to mind.
Joe thought that: “The 40-hour week has given the opportunity to many to while away their time in hotels,” and “The trouble is that Queenland gets branded as being a part of Australia.” As Queensland’s longest serving Premier he started to think of it as his own little nation at times.
So I’m not pointing the finger just at American politicians. But after reading his platform, watching his speeches, yes…I’m a little terrified of what will happen should Romney take over the seat of American power and decision making. Seems I am not alone in that. Some just express it better than others.
Samuel L. Jackson tells it as only Samuel can…
Go Samuel !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I absolutely love the Samuel L. Jackson video, and I’m glad you’ve put it on here! Especially considering that you don’t even live here. It’s too bad that you can’t come here and help us win against Romney! π

you and me both Jo tho I can safely say that I’m not terrified(regarding the U.S. election coming up). However with all the states with new voter ID laws, designed specifically to disenfranchise people who will likely vote democratic (Obama), it worries me a little. that’s how dubya got to be president in 2000 and it’s how he was “re-elected”. he was NEVER elected president, both elections were stolen. if Obama loses, my dream of retiring to Spain is shot to h*ll……I could write more, alas, gotta go for now. might be back later to comment further. and to watch the Samuel Jackson video!!

You’re worried, Jo? (Not saying you’re wrong!) I’m going to have to live in the country that man will screw up (worse) given the chance. Come on, people. We’ve tried deregulation and trickle-down economics for thirty years. They sounded slightly plausible in 1980, but by this time we know that They. Do. Not. Work. It’s time to move on, unless you enjoy letting people who despise you suck you completely dry financially.
Ahem. Rant off.

Many of the decisions that are made in America have a trickle down effect. Because of American decisions, New Zealand troops are dead. And that is just one of the effects. When a country as large as the US makes decisions it just is that other countries [sometimes it takes time, sometimes we feel the effect quite soon] get caught in its wake whether they want to or not.

Thank you SO much for taking a stand; and it is so important to show what non-Americans think of Romney…what I know everyone knew about Dubya in those terrible years. If Romney wins we’re toast.

I’ve not been able to find ONE person here in New Zealand who doesn’t think that Romney is as bad as ‘dubya’…oh I love that name…it fits him to a tee. Most also believe though that Americans will not vote Romney in – of that I am not so sure. I can neither understand nor bear to think of it.

I’m not so sure, either. And that is so scary! We may make our move to Mexico sooner than anticipated.

Great post, Jo. Only you have it backwards. Ryan will be President – like Cheney was – (which is F-R-I-G-H-T-E-N-I-N-G) and Mitt, well, Mitt will be Mitt. (S-C-A-R-Y!)
