There are vampires…and then there are vampires.

I fell in love with vampire mythology when Anne Rice dreamed up the best vampire that had ever existed in Lestat.

I must also say that Tom Cruise being a couch jumping, alien believing religious nut made perfect sense to play him in the movie.

Why ?

Because Lestat is a little, well maybe more than a little, unhinged. But in a good way…for a vampire that is. Vampires should scare you. Like a snake. Mezmerize and hypnotise and then strike.

Yes I have said I like Twilight. I also watch The Vampire Dairies (Ian Somerhalder is a softer version of Lestat if you ask me).

Ian Somehalder as Damon Salvatore

But let’s face it…they’re more hot than scary.

And now I will admiit to another addiction. Almost (I said almost) on a par with Supernatural and The Boys.

True Blood.

Come on…it is…well it is !!!

Just like Supernatural I saw the first episode by mistake.

Ahhhhhhhhhh…The Boys

Just like Supernatural (hey I have to mention it when I can) I was hooked immediately.

You didn’t think I’d be happy with one picture did you ???

The introduction credits are superb. Gritty…a little gross even, and awesome music. It was like nothing I had seen before.

To make it even better…SCARY vampires. Okay Bill may be a bit of a softie, but the rest would rip your throat out in a second. That’s what vampires should be like. It also helps if they are hot as well.

Like the character Eric Northman, played by Alexander Skarsgard.

After Lestat…this guy is the best vampire !!!

There are also telepaths, werewolves, werepanthers, a few fairies, witches and ghosts. There’s more but I don’t want to confuse you too much.

Sam (shapeshifter)

What is surprising to me is that over the past four seasons – season five has just started – the TV show has deviated quite a way from the books.

Nelson Ellis (Lafayette Reynolds) and Rutina Wesley (Tara)

Yes I have read ALL the books. While I got The Daughter in to watching the show (which she will never admit to BTW), she got me in to reading the books by Charlaine Harris. Most of them I really enjoyed. No…they are not Lord of the Rings, but they are fun, and they keep you wanting to turn the page.

Joe Manganiello (Alcide the werewolf) A seriously hot werewolf

So – right. The TV show is very different from the books and yet that is not all bad. Usually I get annoyed at such things…but not with True Blood. Both work, if for different reasons.

Deborah Ann Woll (Vampire Jessica)…love this girl

Anywho…these tempermental supernatural beings are back for Season Five and I couldn’t be happier. I just wish they’d make more episodes than they do. Watching Eric fly around and take his shirt off of course has absolutely nothing to do with it.

I watch it for the mythology and the story only !!!

What is also cool is that the lead female character is played by a New Zealander. Anna Paquin.

Anna Paquin (Sookie) with boyfriend Stephen Moyer (Bill)

So she was technically born in Canada…she grew up here from age 4 !!!! That gives us rights. Anna is the second youngest person to win an Academy Award. She won at age 11 for her performance in The Piano.

Her brother in the show is played by Australian actor Ryan Kwanten who I first saw when he was in the Australian series Home and Away.

Ryan Kwanten (Jason)

Hey…it was the kids who watched it, not me.

The rest of the cast does a pretty good job…after Eric, well I love the character of vampire Pam. Kristen Bauer van Straten is terrific.

Kristin Bauer van Straten as Pam

True Blood has been nominated in over 30 categories of awards, winning many of them. The list includes Emmys, Golden Globes, Grammys, People’s Choice, even Scream awards.

Season four ended with so many cliffhangers.

  • The ghost of a serial killer warning his widow her new husband is trouble.
  • The escape of the craziest vampire that ever existed Russell Edgington – why oh why did you not KILL him Eric ??????
  • The return of a gay, religious, anti-vampire fanatic who is now a vampire.
  • The shooting of one of the main female characters.

Season five has some great additions to the cast.

Lucy Griffiths as Eric’s sister
Scott Foley as Patrick
Peter Mensah was also in Spartacus
Chris Meloni in a change of pace.
Carolyn Hennesy plays a vampire.

While I could have possibly survived without Tara turning in to a vampire, I’ll hold judgement on that and see how it plays out.

After all there is ALL that sex as well. It reminds me of Spartacus. If you haven’t watched Spartacus…you haven’t lived.

I remember The Son being shocked the first time he saw it, True Blood I mean, well the sex on True Blood.

“What the hell are you watching,” was what I think he said. He did of course firmly plant himself on the lounge for the rest of the episode.

We single girls have to get our thrills somewhere. And Supernatural has finished until next season. I would just like to scream out – THANK YOU – to the universe for there being a Season 8 with The Boys and Baby.

The Boys …and Baby

In the meantime I’ll settle in for the winter months with the other supernatural beings from Bom Temps in Louisiana.

  1. I realize that a lot of people are into them, they are just not my cup of tea. Too scary. When young I could not watch scary movies and Hitchcocks Birds was a nightmare to me. It was only after seeing it as an adult that I could find the humor in it. Not so with today’s vampire movies. But that’s just me.

    BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!

    1. Francine you would be safe to watch Twilight…I mean they glitter, don’t have fangs, and are the polite, open the door for you supermodel looking kind. Not at all scary !!! As a kid I saw the movie Dracula: Prince of Darkness with Christopher Lee.

      It scared me silly.
And I do admit one other great vampire portrayal – Bram Stoker’s Dracula – was pretty gruesome in parts.
Now while I watch The Vampire Diaries…it is too much like Twilight to be scary. Even the scary vampires are more sexy than scary.
      Klaus
Does he look scary to you ???
But perhaps you should stay away from the True Blood crew. While not really scary to watch it is a bit gruesome at times.
But then, look at him…he’s not that scary and he is advertising True Blood…the blood in a bottle…comes in all types now I believe.

Wow…looks like Russell has a point about them all looking like porn stars these days.

I can barely wait for Season 8. Moving on, there’s Vampire Diaries, too. Hot stuff 😉

You did a favor to all the single (and even the others) girls by writing this post.
    Thumbs up! 😀

  3. I always liked Louis, but Lestat was pretty freaking awesome! Can’t wait til the next episode of True Blood, the opener was fantastic!

    1. I thought Louis was lovely…but that’s my point. He was too nice too be a vampire. You should read Anne Rice’s book ‘The Vampire Lestat’. It tells you all about him…where he came from…through (very quickly) his period with Louis, and lots more about his encounters with others, right up until pesent day…well reasonable present. He is awesome.

  4. It’s funny how the original cinematic vampires (such as Nosferatu) were misshaped monsters with pointy heads, and too many teeth to fit into their mouths. By the Sixties they became sex symbols (Barnabas Collins). Now they look like porn stars. LOL.

    1. I was going to totally disagree with you about the porn star thing…then I went looking for some pics for another comment…and oh well…shot down I was !!!!
I was even going to argue that Barnabas wasn’t sexy. Damn it though…found shot of him. He is !!!

  5. I’m super picky about vampires because they often come off sissy, but from your review it looks like I’ll have to check out True Blood. After all, I have to trust a fellow Supernatural fan 🙂

Start at the beginning if you are going to watch it…too confusing otherwise.

Are you missing SPN as much as I am ???

  7. I plan on starting Rice’s vampire chronicles later this year. I love her writing. The Witching Hour is one of my faves. Sometimes it is fun to get the crap scared out of you. I haven’t read a lot of horror, but I just finished Stephen King’s On Writing book and I think I may get into his work soon. I like his style.

    1. She’s great to read. You must read ‘The Vampire Lestat’…it is I think my favourite of all her books. I have not read Stephen King for a long time. I did love Misery and The Green Mile. But I got put off after Jack and his portrayal in The Shining. Maybe I should give him another chance though.

Have you ever seen “Being human”? The US version? Love it as well and if you haven’t, you will like it too. 🙂

  9. Hi Jo. I’ve seen a couple of episodes of True Blood, but I think I’ll have to catch it from the beginning. I’ve heard a lot of good things about it, and your post has sold it to me.
Nothing to do with vampires, obviously.

  10. I always love your enthusiastic reviews of these things! Don’t forget I’m working the Supernatural boys into this year’s Buckshot Bryant addendum.

So if you’re a KiwiAussie is Anna Paquin a KiwiMountie?

And since you mentioned Anne Rice and Lestat, some of my newer readers keep calling me “the Brat Prince of blogging” and said it has to do with Lestat’s nickname (?) I haven’t read Anne Rice’s stuff yet. Is them saying that a compliment or an insult?

    Like

    1. Can’t wait to read the addendum….ohhhhhhh going all gooey just thinking about it.
      The Brat Prince huh ???
It is an affectionate nickname given to him because he is rather bold and enthusiastic about things. Lestat rather likes it, so that is the main thing I think. Hmmmmmmm…we may have to look at the possibility of a future addendum with Lestat don’t you think ?????
You have to read her books. I am reading ‘The Wolf Gift’ at the moment, but Lestat will always be my favourite character of hers. A cowboy vamp…the possibilities are endless are they not ????
Lestat de Lioncourt – is that not a wonderful name…and it is actually pronounced: Les-dot
As for Anna…yep, yep, yep…we have rights to most of THAT girl !!!! Hehehehe

      1. So you’re saying it’s meant as a compliment I guess then. But I thought Lestat was a villain?

Yep, the supernatural boys meet Buckshot Bryant thanks to some just-discovered documents revealing this never-before known chapter in Buckshot’s life.

Should I start with Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches or her Mummy book or go cliche and start with Interview with the Vampire? I’ll take your advice on this.

Speaking of vampires in westerns have you seen Billy the Kid vs Dracula or Curse of the Undead or Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat? Those are all westerns with vampires in them.

        Like

        1. Yes but he is a cool villian. Start with The Vampire Chronicles. If you’re gonna read her you may as well begin with her best stuff.
God I am sooooooo sheltered…never heard of any of these.
          😦
You do know that The Boys can time travel with the aid of Castiel? They popped back to the old west (1861) in an episode titled “Frontierland”
Reminds me of Frontierado a bit. Dean looked amazing as a cowboy…he even had a Main Street shootout which of course he won !!!

          Like

          1. I didn’t know they could time travel! Okay, is Interview the start of the Vampire Chronicles like it says online, or are there prequel books I should read?

Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat would probably be a vampires in the olllllld west movie you would like. The other two are noted mainly for their Bad Movie appeal.

          2. These books all have something to do with The Vampire Chronicles. However some are from her ‘The Lifes of the Mayfair Witches’ series.

            Here is how they run…
            Interview with the Vampire (1976)
            The Vampire Lestat (1985)
The Queen of the Damned (1988)
            The Witching Hour (1990)
The Tale of the Body Thief (1992)
            Lasher (1993)
            Taltos (1994)
            Memnoch the Devil (1995)
            The Vampire Armand (1998)
            Merrick (2000)
            Blood and Gold (2001)
            Blackwood Farm (2002)
            Blood Canticle (2003)

But her series The Vampire Chronicles consists of these books:

            Interview with the Vampire (1976)
            The Vampire Lestat (1985)
The Queen of the Damned (1988)
The Tale of the Body Thief (1992)
            Memnoch the Devil (1995)
            The Vampire Armand (1998)
            Merrick (2000)
            Blood and Gold (2001)
            Blackwood Farm (2002)
            Blood Canticle (2003)

The ones that are from the Mayfair Witches are:

            The Witching Hour (1990)
            Lasher (1993)
            Taltos (1994)

            Hope this makes sense…
