Speculation

***

It is always nice when a friend remembers you in their will isn’t it ?

But what if what they leave you is a choice ?

Remember that TV show The Money Or The Box.

What would you choose ?

I have always thought that I would go for the box.

Speculation is about being left that type of choice.

Buddy Johnston, Sothum (Stanley Riordan), and Andrew Wrangles have been friends since college.

Sothum, a genius in Andrew’s eyes who has not quite lived up to his full potential. Buddy, born to wealth with two bestsellers and the belief that life owed him everything. Andrew, both a student and teacher of philosophy every day of his life.

After Sothum’s death Andrew is left three boxes of papers from Sothum to sort through. He is also left with a choice. $10,000,000.00 or an envelope.

Andrew begins to search through the boxes hoping to find some clue as to what is in the envelope.

He is also searching for a clue to a bigger mystery. What happened to Buddy Johnston ? Buddy is missing presumed to have committed suicide after being ridiculed in the press. Andrew believes that Buddy would have found it too difficult to leave this world without a suicide note. During a conversation with Sothum about Buddy’s disappearance Andrew is connvinced that Sothum knows and is hiding something.

Has Sothum left a clue to the Buddy mystery, has he left behind the answer to a previously mind boggling philosophical question, or is Sothum being Sothum one last time and playing a prank on Andrew ?

There is no time limit on when Andrew must decide…but his wife Cheryl is definite about what she wants him to choose…and quickly.

I was completely fascinated from the first sentence. Edmund Jorgensen has crafted four believable, funny, quirky characters that meld together seamlessly in this book.

When it came to my eyes demanding to be closed, it was with sadness that I placed the book under the pillow to be picked up again at the earliest opportunity.

Seriously. I really hated my body’s need to sleep.

The back story of these four characters is weaved effortlessly through the book. The more you learn the more you want to know.
The pace builds as you get closer to the heart of the story.
Speculation did what few books do these days. It surprised me.
If there is one new author you need to discover…have a look at Edmund Jorgensen.
If there is space on your bookshelf for one more book…read Speculation.
While I will be lending this book to friends…it has found a permanent home to be taken out and reread.

  1. Edmund Jorgensen was blessed to have you review his work, Jo. What a fantastic review. I hope people get as excited about my books, although mine are 180 degrees away in subject content and genre than Mr. Jorgensen’s books are. Put my name in the hat for your contest, dear. I’m ready to win a prize. 😉

    1. I have been getting a few books to review and really, sometimes it is hard as you are not supposed to trash them. You have to find the positive things to comment on and at times I have simply not even done the review. But I loved this book. It is so unusual. I really love it when a writer surprises me…Edmund Jorgensen did with this book. The last part of it is so different in how the story is presented, and could have gone so totally wrong but he made it work. It really was a joy to read and write about this one.

  3. Lol, well with all the Mojo Hudson Howl just worked, I probably don’t stand much of a chance of winning, but it sounds like a wonderful read anyway! 😉 I may see if we can order a copy (or if we already have it) at the library. 🙂

    1. Yep I think he may have put the hex on anyone else having a chance…hehehe.
Do see if you can get it…it is a really unusual book. The last part is mainly dialogue…which doesn’t sound like a good thing…but it is very cleverly done…very cleverly done.

  7. Hi Jo,

Thanks for the awesome review! I’m so glad that you enjoyed Speculation–and especially that you liked the dialogue, which is (I’ll admit it) a part near and dear to my heart.

Also: you should write book jacket copy professionally. You’re great at distilling the story!

    Cheers,

    Edmund

  8. Arrh… now… thats a million dollar question..
I think i have all that I need, and money couldnt buy me much more except a bigger house, which I would have to clean, a Bigger brighter Car. But it still only takes me from A to B as my present one does..
Money is on a downward spiral at the moment.. So I think I would take a gamble and see what was in the envelope..
Love to you Jo, and all is well within my Garden… / World…. Hugs to you xxx

  9. Just catching up on things and read this… sounds like a great book. I will have to look for it when home this summer! I am always on the look out for a good recommedation. My pile of books I lugged halfway around the world are all read. A co-worker and I have the same tastes and we share books often. She won’t be there next year so this will be on my ‘to read’ list. THANKS! I love to read and mystery and adventure are my favourites! I am a BIG Agatha Christie fan and nobody could do it better to surprise me. Funny we are just working on an adventure and mystery unit at school with the kids and they are LOVING it. I think it helps with my enthusaim. I am reading them a mystery now about Niagara Falls and the other day I gave them the choice of 1 more chapter or free reading (and they are avid readers). All on their edge of their seats they said 1 more unamiously!!!

        1. I too have delayed reading Curtain. I don’t know how I would cope with the ending. You got to see Mousetrap. That is on my bucket list. I still have all the paperback I had as a child.

          1. Oh it was great… small little theater in London… amazing! All my books are well loved and most come from second hand shops. Too funny you haven’t read Curtain either. I almost didn’t read her books. An English teacher in highschool hated her work and turned me against reading. Years later a friend bugged me until I read Orient Express and was hooked!
