Each time I drive to Auckland to visit the kiddywinkles I pass Waihi Cemetery and I finally managed to stop and spend some time there.
These were taken with my cell phone (I think I LOVE the cell phone camera).
Waihi Cemetery was established prior to 1898 as the public cemetery for Waihi and surrounding rural areas, which also included the small coastal township of Waihi Beach.
Between the years 1902 and 1913 records from the cemetery were destroyed by fire.

And I was drawn to this guy.
I think it is a representation of the Archangel Gabriel because he is holding a horn.
I was born in the land of Banjo Paterson, gum trees, and weather extremes.
I am a freelance photographer. I love to make images that make people happy. To capture forever a precious moment.
I am also a freelance writer/editor.
I live in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, but still like to claim my Australian heritage.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Communications in 2008.
I am writing my first novel.
I love to write poetry, short stories, and also write for the web.
And there is nothing that is on a par with a sunny summer's day spent at Waihi Beach.

I love photographing old cemeteries. The gravestones are becoming a lost art. I once went to the old Savanna Georgia graveyard and took pics. When I developed the films, there in one picture was the face of 3 children almost as clear as if they were really there, they weren’t! When I blew up the picture I found the grave actually held children who died in a house fire! It was the first and last ‘spooky’ event I ever had at a cemetery.
Oh – a fellow cemetery lover.
Bit spooky about the kids…ghost kids are scary…’cause I watch way too much Supernatural.
When I was young I used to spend hours in cemeteries. Sydney has some good ones !!!
Thank you for Herb…what a lovely surprise. I am not surprised YOU noticed the horn…hehehe
As for Gabriel…well my all time favourite Gabriel is this fella…
You better step up the pace…if you ever wanna TRY to catch me…hehehe !!
Congratulations on 500 posts Jo! Don’t tell anyone, but I think old cemeteries are cool. Would love to photograph one someday. Beautiful cell phone photos!
Oh my God 500??? when did you begin? what an amazing milestone well done!
Phone cameras are incredibly useful now they are good quality too, no need to miss an opportunity any more 🙂
Wow, Jo!
This is a great post.
Happy 500th!!! 🙂
And yes, I too love the camera on my phone!
These pictures are quite moving! There is something about a cemetery, especially one with some years.

Wonderful photos, interesting cemetery. I always liked a little angel at the top of a tombstone. It’s like that person is being guarded through eternity. I guess Gabriel watches over them all. 🙂
500!!!! I feel silly now celebrating my 100th. Hehe. Congrats for reaching your milestone. What an outstanding blogger you are keeping up and updating your blog all the time. Salute!
Jo, I’m addicted to two things: hanging out in cemeteries and watching Supernatural. Your photos at Waihi are lovely and I’m sooooo glad I scrolled down to read the comments. What a nice surprise to see the boys. Congrats on your milestone! I’ve almost made it to 10. ; )
