500 posts and to celebrate…A look at Waihi Cemetery

Each time I drive to Auckland to visit the kiddywinkles I pass Waihi Cemetery and I finally managed to stop and spend some time there.

These  were taken with my cell phone (I think I LOVE the cell phone camera).

Waihi Cemetery was established prior to 1898 as the public cemetery for Waihi and surrounding rural areas, which also included the small coastal township of Waihi Beach.

Between the years 1902 and 1913 records from the cemetery were destroyed by fire.

And I was drawn to this guy.

I think it is a representation of the Archangel Gabriel because he is holding a horn.

I could not stop taking his photo.

But I will only bore you with three of them.

  2. I love photographing old cemeteries. The gravestones are becoming a lost art. I once went to the old Savanna Georgia graveyard and took pics. When I developed the films, there in one picture was the face of 3 children almost as clear as if they were really there, they weren’t! When I blew up the picture I found the grave actually held children who died in a house fire! It was the first and last ‘spooky’ event I ever had at a cemetery.

Bit spooky about the kids…ghost kids are scary…’cause I watch way too much Supernatural.
When I was young I used to spend hours in cemeteries. Sydney has some good ones !!!

  10. Wonderful photos, interesting cemetery. I always liked a little angel at the top of a tombstone. It’s like that person is being guarded through eternity. I guess Gabriel watches over them all. 🙂
