Weekly Photo Challenge: Inside

INSIDE

In another time

not of her making,

something grew quietly and

insidiously, taking over until it rang out her

death knell, she knew no fear as she listened to the rhythmic pealing

eventually, he had told her, we all seek our intrinsic selves

********

Now this week’s weekly photo challenge was for capturing something/someone inside something. I think this fits.

Girl in a plastic bubble

******

This weekend the fur babies and I stayed inside due to Cyclone Lusi…which though bringing wind and rain to the area was not too bad.

At times Charlie and Chevvy thought it was all too much having to stay inside for so long…

IMG_4026

But for the most they and Jack and Crash amused themselves. While I watched movies and read.

And this little guy thought it was much better to be inside…

Now the sun is shining so I am off to finish harvesting those potato tyres. Might be good for dinner tonight !!!!

World Animal Day.

World Animal Day is celebrated around the world each year on October the 4th. It originally started in Florence, Italy in 1931 at a convention of ecologists. Today, animal life in all its forms is celebrated, and special events are held in locations all around our world. The 4th of October was originally chosen for World Animal Day because it happens to be the feast day of Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment.

So in our house the furry beasts are all a flutter…as you can plainly see from these photos.

A New Year is upon us…

When looking up NEW I found quite a few synonyms.

advanced, au courant, brand-new, contemporary, current, cutting-edge, dewy, different, dissimilar, distinct, fashionable, inexperienced, just out, late, latest, modern, modernistic, modish, neoteric, newfangled, novel, now, original, recent, spick-and-span, state-of-the-art, strange, topical, ultramodern, unaccustomed, uncontaminated, unfamiliar, unique, unknown, unlike, unseasoned, unskilled, unspoiled, untouched, untrained, untried, untrodden, unused, unusual, up-to-date, virgin, youthful

And there are some interesting facts on New Year as well…did you know that…

  • The Romans dedicated New Year’s Day to Janus, the god of gates, doors, and beginnings
  • In England, the Feast of the Annunciation on March 25, was the first day of the new year until the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in 1752
  • January 1 was the Feast of the Circumcision, considered to be the eighth day of Christ’s life, counting from December 25 when his birth is celebrated. [this is supposedly when they chopped off his bits]
  • January 1 was designated as the beginning of the New Year by Pope Gregory when he designed the Liturgical Calendar.
  • The first time the new year was celebrated on January 1st was in Rome in 153 B.C. January did not even exist until around 700 B.C., when Rome’s second king added the months of January and February.
  • Babylonians were the first to make New Year’s resolutions.
  • “Auld Lang Syne” is an old Scottish song that was first published by the poet Robert Burns in the 1796 edition of the book, Scots Musical Museum. He heard it being sung by an old man from the Ayrshire area of Scotland, where Burns was from.The ballad “Old Long Syne” printed in 1711 by James Watson is strikingly similar.

Auld Long Syne

OLD LONG SYNE,

Should Old Acquaintance be forgot,
and never thought upon;
The flames of Love extinguished,
and fully past and gone:
Is thy sweet Heart now grown so cold,
that loving Breast of thine;
That thou canst never once reflect
on Old long syne.
On Old long syne my Jo,
in Old long syne,
That thou canst never once reflect,
in Old long syne.

My Heart is ravisht with delight,
when thee I think upon;
All Grief and Sorrow takes the flight,
and speedily is gone;
The bright resemblance of thy Face,
so fills this, Heart of mine;
That Force nor Fate can me displease,
for Old long syne
For Old long syne my Jo,
for Old long syne
That thou canst never once reflect,
On Old long syne.

Since thoughts of thee doth banish grief,
when from thee I am gone;
will not thy presence yeild relief,
to this sad Heart of mine:
Why doth thy presence me defeat,
with excellence divine?
Especially When I reflect
on old long syne
On old long syne my Jo,
on Old long syne:
That thou canst never once reflect,
on Old long syne.

Oh then Clorinda pray prove more kind,
be not ungratefull still:
Since that my Heart ye have so ty’d,
why shoud ye then it kill:
Sure Faith and Hope depends on thee,
kill me not with disdain:
Or else I swear I`le still reflect,
on Old long syne.
On Old long syne my Jo,
on Old long syne;
I pray you do but once reflect,
on Old long syne.

Since you have rob’d me of my Heart;
It`s reason I have yours;
Which Madam Nature doth impart,
to your black Eyes and Browes:
With honour it doth not consist,
to hold thy Slave in pain:
Pray let thy rigour then resist,
for Old long syne.
For Old long syne my Jo,
for Old long syne;
That then canst never once reflect,
on Old long syne.
It is my freedom I do crave,
by depracating pain;
Since libertie ye will not give,
who glories in his Chain:
But yet I wish the gods to move
that noble Heart of thine;
To pitty since ye cannot love,
for Old long syne.
For Old long syne my Jo,
for Old long syne;
That thou may ever once reflect,
on Old long syne.

Dear will ye give it back my Heart,
since I cannot have thine;
For since with yours ye will not part,
no reason you have mine;
But yet I think I’le let it ly,
within that breast of thine,
Who hath a Thief in every Eye,
to Make me live in pain.
For Old long syne my Jo,
for Old long syne;
Wilt thou not ever once reflect,
On Old long syne.

THE SECOND PART.

Where are thy Protestations,
thy Vows and Oaths my Dear;
Thou made to me and to thee,
in Register yet clear.
Is Faith and Truth so violat,
to immortal Gods divine,
As never once for to reflect
on Old long syne;
On Old long syne my Jo,
on Old long syne;
That thou canst never once reflect.
on Old long syne.

It’s Cupid’s Fears or Frostie Cares
that makes thy Sprits decay:
Or it’s an Object of more worth
hath stoln my Heart away?
Or some desert makes thee neglect
her, so much once was thine.
That thou canst never once reflect
on Old long syne
on Old long syne my Jo,
on Old long syne;
That thou canst never once reflect
Old long syne.

Is Worldly cares so desperat,
that makes thee to despair?
It’s that, thee exasperats
and makes thee to forbear?
If thou of Ty, were free as I,
Thou surely should be mine,
If this ware true we should renew
kind Old long syne.
For Old long syne my Jo,
for Old long syne,
That thou canst never once reflect,
on Old long syne.

But since that nothing can prevail
and all hopes are in vain;
From these rejected Eyes of mine,
still showers of Tears Shall rain:
Although thou has me now forgot,
yet I’le continue thine;
And ne’r neglect for to reflect,
on Old long syne
On Old long syne my Jo,
on Old long syne;
That thou canst never once reflect
on Old long syne.

If ever I have a house my Dear,
that’s truely called mine;
That can afford best Countrey chear,
or ought that’s good therein:
Though thou wast Rebell to the King
and beat with Wind and Rain,
Assure thy self of welcome Love,
for Old long syne.
For Old long syne my Jo,
for Old long syne,
Assure thy self of welcome Love,
for Old long syne.

Robert Burns’  version..

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne ?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp !
and surely I’ll be mine !
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We twa hae run about the braes,
and pu’d the gowans fine ;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
sin auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We twa hae paidl’d i’ the burn,
frae morning sun till dine ;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
sin auld lang syne.

CHORUS

And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere !
and gie’s a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll tak a right gude-willy waught,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS
So in honour of both Burns and Scotland…this version almost always brings tears to my eyes. I kind of like Watson’s version…the fact that the name JO appears quite a lot of course has nothing to do with it.
  • The earliest recording of a new year celebration is said to have been in Mesopotamia, around 2000 B.C. and it was celebrated around the time of the vernal equinox, in mid-March.

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Your 2012 Best People or Animals

childrenpit bull puppychildrenNow I know we are supposed to stick to three images. Cee – I hope you’ll forgive me but I wanted to include this one of Charlie.

catThat gorgeous eye you are looking at is sore and yukky at the moment. I took him to the vet on Christmas Eve where they got a bucket load of debris/dirt out of it…he has antibiotic cream put in it every 3-4 hours, and is very patient with me doing that. Keep your fingers crossed it keeps improving and is ALL better soon. Oh and Charlie has made a friend. I found the two of them sitting on my deck the other morning. He has been trying to be friends with the other cats around here for so long…with little success. So this [if it progresses nicely] is great news. Charlie is a very social pussy cat.

Travel Theme: White

Ailsa’s theme this week is WHITE. This wee guy greets Chevvy and I often as we walk around the estuary and I wanted to share him with you.

And because it talks about vanilla sex I thought I might add my thoughts on something I read this past week.

Okay I caved and actually read this book. Have you heard the expression ‘curiosity killed the cat’?

Christian Grey. Where do I start? Fifty shades of mental illness. How on earth this guy ever got around to making $100,000.00 an hour is a miracle. He spends hours training. I mean let’s be real here. You need to be in shape to be able to smack the arse off a petite, whiny virgin, if you really want to make her run for the hills. Christian with the grey eyes. How many ways are there to describe grey eyes? A lot it seems. There’s grey, intensely grey, dark and grey, serious and grey, super grey. Need I go on?

Christian is obsessed with Ana eating. It’s a little creepy. He even puts it in the contract she must sign. Oh yes. Ana has to sign a contract of what she will and won’t do. Foods she is allowed are listed in Appendix Four. And no snacking between meals, please.

As for Ana. She ‘rolls her eyes’ 25 times throughout the book. A little dangerous doing that, as Christian thinks that is an over the knee spanking offence. Then there is Ana’s inner goddess, who glares, is thrilled, dances, nods, jumps, stops jumping, glows, is surprised, is pleased, is not pleased, smacks her lips, does back flips, bounces, wakes, pleads, stares open mouthed, prostrates herself, spins, has a do not disturb sign on her door, is beside herself, grins, pouts, scowls, basks, gazes, swoons, is hopeful, and she also drove me to drink.

Repetition, repetition, repetition. Using my kindle search tool I discovered that Ana flushes exactly 100 times. There’s actually a whole lot of religion in the book. 39 holy shits, 30 holy craps and 18 holy fucks.

There is so much wrong with this book I don’t really know where to start the criticism. Although I could start with the fact the main character is a girl with silver balls in her vagina getting spanked and seemingly enjoying herself, who squirms under people’s gazes and says jeez 81 times. This same girl spends her time hooking up with an Adonis who has a red room of pain, won’t let anyone touch certain areas of his body and wants to turn this little virgin in to his own personal submissive.

Let me warn you. It is a wasted couple of hours that you will NEVER get back. I actually finished it because I wanted–I don’t know what I wanted. Maybe to be able to say I’d been to literary hell and back. These are two of the most annoying characters I have ever come across. Seriously, don’t waste your time. I’d rather have gone to the dentist.

Article first published as Book Review: Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James on Blogcritics.

As Cheryl has kindly asked after Jackie, I just want to mention that my beautiful Jackie is doing better. She is still on a low fat diet. We are treating her as if she has pancreatitis. Which means a low fat diet forever. They only way to know for sure are hugely expensive tests or treat her for it by adjusting her diet. She’s a big girl so can afford to lose a little weight. And I was switching her over to the raw food diet anyways, so I don’t mind that.

They still don’t know for sure what was wrong, and she has to go back for FIV tests again in 60 days just to be sure.

She sends you all her thanks for all the wonderful well wishes, hugs and head pats !!!!

New life…

My neighbour’s foxy has had puppies from another local foxy that roamed free here for a time. Yesterday I got to spend some time with them.

Though puppies are gorgeous and pull at your heart…I couldn’t help thinking of all the puppies and kittens who are born and abandoned because Mum wasn’t spayed.

These guys will get homes. They are luckier than many others.

Yet I can’t help thinking that they should not have been born. Had Mum been spayed as she should be.

I understand the pull to have baby animals…my kids wanted that too.

“Please Mum…can Chevvy/Jack have babies ?? Please, please Mum !!”

And I have to admit I would have adored having babies in the house…but I firmly resisted and both my girls were spayed. Charlie was also dealt to…and is none the worse for it…contrary to some male opinion on the subject !!!

We have indulged our passion for fur babies by fostering some of the abandoned fur babies often left on the door of the local vet clinic.

A part of me can’t help wishing more people did the same and reduced the number of babies born so that those that are stand a better chance of finding their forever homes and being a loved family member.

Backyard bliss…

I have a friend…well I do have more than one…but this one is something special.

In lots of ways, but she has recently taken up or rather retaken up painting.

And by all that is holy…she is good. Really good.

And she is turning one of my photos in to a painting.

This one…

When it is done I’ll post it here…can’t wait to see it myself.

I visited my friend yesterday…which is when I learned about the painting in the works.

She has a cat…a very lady like beauty named Sparky.

Sparky gets her chicken warmed before served.

And perfectly right she is to demand that I say.

She is actually a sweet cat.

And this is the view from my artist friend’s back yard.

In case you’re not jealous yet…one more.

Those hills are known as the Kaimai Ranges.

And as we sit on her patio admiring both Sparky and the view, this lady keeps us relaxed with her tinkling.

Now my friend does quite a few other things (she’s a Kiwi – they are great mutli-taskers and like DIY), she also writes – Fibonacci x 2.

So I say that makes me pretty lucky – wouldn’t you ???

***

Now – did you notice that the header and the 1st photo are the same.

Only one has been cropped of course.

So…which one do you prefer ?

Tip…click on the photo to see it enlarged.

Then compare.

I know my choice – I am interested to hear yours !!!

Jack wants some air time.

I realised that lately Charlie and Chevvy have been getting a lot of exposure.

Jack is the big momma in our house.

A real lady…with a streak of don’t mess with me thrown in to the mix.

So…rather than get on her bad side.

Here is my girl.
